Reclaim Camissa Walking Tour

Camissa is an ancient Khoi name for Cape Town, meaning ‘the place of sweet waters’. This water is the very reason for the development of Cape Town in its current location, offering water to Khoi nomadic tribes and later to passing trade ships. The walk will cover aspects of the Camissa and include the explanation of our natural history, some of the cultural stories associated with our water system and the possible way forward to a more sustainable water future in Cape Town.

Starting in Deer Park we will follow the path of the water and its associated infrastructure and historical cultural points. The places of interest will take us from the base of table mountain through the now suburban landscape and into the outskirts of town highlighting ancient waterways, springs and reservoirs along the way. The tour will finish at The Mount Nelson where the city tour will kick off.

Led by the City of Cape Town, this tour will follow on from the Camissa tour and cover the sustainable initiatives that the city is currently rolling out. We will make our way through the city via various means of public transport. We will finish at the Greenpoint Urban Park elevated circle where we will catch the My Citi Bus back to the CTICC.

The Mannenberg Housing Office is a 4 star rated green building and all documentation for the certification was done in house by city officials. We will start the tour with a presentation by the project team followed by a walking tour of the building

The no 1 Silo building in the V&A Waterfront is South Africa's second 6-star rated green building. We will start the tour with a talk by the project team and then take a tour of the building, highlighting the aspects making it a 6-star rated building.

The GBCSA’s signature course will be offered alongside the convention and tours. This course introduces the Green Star rating tools and is the first requirement for obtaining status as a Green Star SA Accredited Professional.

The Green Star Accredited Professional course gives a comprehensive overview of the SA Green Star building rating system and trains industry professionals on each category and credit within the rating system (Management, Indoor Environmental Quality, Energy, Transport, Water, Materials, Land Use & Ecology, Emissions, Innovations, Integrated Design).  After attending the course, an optional exam may be written online, earning the successful candidates the designation of “Green Star SA Accredited Professional”.
